UNESCO Designation Prompts Global Tribute to Allameh Tabataba’i

TEHRAN -- Iran will organize at least 150 events across 20 provinces, 40 cities and 10 countries to commemorate the intellectual and spiritual legacy of prominent Iranian philosopher and Qur’anic scholar Allameh Seyyed Muhammad Hussein Tabataba’i, following UNESCO’s designation of 2026 and 2027 for international recognition of his contributions, according to the organizers.
Muhammad-Bagher Khorasani, executive director and secretary of the 12th Allameh Tabataba’i Commemorative Program, announced the plans at a press conference in Qom, outlining this year’s theme: “Allameh Tabataba’i: A Symbol of Rationality and Spirituality.”
The commemorative program will run from November 7 to 21, 2026, while the first Week of Wisdom and Philosophy will take place from November 15 to 21. The latter initiative will extend from the anniversary of Allameh Tabataba’i’s passing to the annual commemoration of Persian philosopher Al-Farabi.
Khorasani said the Supreme Assembly of Islamic Wisdom, in cooperation with the UNESCO National Commission of Iran, is coordinating the activities to introduce Islamic philosophy and wisdom to domestic and international audiences.
Last year, 135 events were organized over two weeks in three countries. This year, organizers expect participation to expand significantly, with programs planned in at least 10 countries.
Some activities will be coordinated through representatives of Al-Mustafa International University and in cooperation with countries connected to Iran’s Islamic Culture and Relations Organization. Tunisia, for example, will host a joint program on November 20.
The events will include academic conferences, specialized discussions, public lectures and cultural initiatives. One of the planned public programs, titled “A Night with Al-Mizan,” aims to introduce Allameh Tabataba’i’s influential Qur’anic commentary, Tafsir al-Mizan, through mosques and religious centers.
Organizers have also prepared a publication titled Allameh and Al-Mizan, which includes a section called “Allameh and Palestine.” According to Khorasani, the section presents historical documents from Iran’s former intelligence and security organization, SAVAK, examining Allameh Tabataba’i’s views and his support for Palestinian activists during the 1960s and 1970s.
The program will also feature the 16th Gathering of Professors of Rational Sciences on November 18,

alongside conferences in Mashhad and Kermanshah. A major event is scheduled in Kermanshah on November 21.
In another initiative, Radio Maaref is preparing a dedicated program on Tafsir al-Mizan, marking the first time the commentary will receive such a dedicated presentation on Iranian radio, according to the organizers.
Khorasani added that schools and universities have been approached to organize commemorative activities on November 15, the anniversary of Allameh Tabataba’i’s passing.
The organizers will also make previous academic materials available online. Content from 38 specialized events held during the previous 11 editions has been published in 10 commemorative volumes. In addition, 120 papers accepted for the International Congress on Allameh Tabataba’i will be made available to researchers through the Supreme Assembly of Islamic Wisdom’s website.
