Bahrain Arrests Shia Clerics, Religious Reciters Amid Mourning Ceremonies

MANAMA (Dispatches) -- Bahraini
security forces have arrested several Shia clerics, preachers and religious reciters in connection with gatherings commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Fatima al-Zahra, according to religious news outlets and opposition groups, amid a widening security campaign targeting the country’s Shia religious establishment.
Among those detained were Habib Abbas Khamis, head of the Haj Ahmed bin Khamis Hussainiya, and reciter Jalal al-Biladi, both of whom were referred to the Public Prosecution and ordered held for one week pending investigation, the AhlulBayt News Agency reported, citing opposition sources.
In separate raids, reciter Abdullah al-Matrook was arrested after security personnel searched his home, while Hussaini preacher Mulla Habib al-Darazi was detained over allegations that he circulated an audio recording of the Ziyarat Ashura recitation.
Two others — Amir Ahmed Karkour, head of the mourning committee at Hussainiya al-Jufair, and his deputy Hussein Jafar Mehdi — were also reportedly detained and accused of organizing the commemorative ceremonies.
The reported detentions coincide with heightened sectarian sensitivities ahead of a scheduled court verdict on November 8 in the case of several senior Shia clerics, a proceeding that opposition groups have characterized as politically motivated.
In a statement issued Thursday, Bahraini opposition groups warned that the continuation of security policies and the targeting of Shia scholars threatened internal stability and deepened sectarian divisions.
The groups demanded the release of political detainees and an end to what they described as the targeting of Shia religious figures and rituals. The opposition also called for broad peaceful solidarity with detainees ahead of the November 8 verdict.
The arrests are part of a broader pattern of restrictions on Shia religious observances in Bahrain, where the minority monarchy has faced persistent criticism from rights groups over the treatment of its Shia majority.
The latest detentions follow a larger wave of arrests in May, when authorities detained dozens of Shia clerics accused of links to Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corpse — a charge Tehran denied. Tensions have remained elevated since, with opposition groups citing the upcoming verdict as a flashpoint.
The February 14 Revolutionary Youth Coalition has called for public demonstrations on November 8, prompting security forces to raise alert levels in anticipation of unrest.
Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet and has long been a strategic ally of Washington.
