Yemen Warns Civilians to Evacuate Aden Airport Over Saudi Arms Plane
SANA’A -- Yemen’s armed forces warned civilians on Wednesday to evacuate Aden International Airport, saying a Saudi military cargo plane carrying eapons intended for use against the Yemeni people is at the facility in the southern port city, where the Saudi-backed fugitive regime is based. Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesperson for the Yemeni armed forces, said in a post on X that the evacuation is necessary because of the presence of the Saudi military aircraft carrying weapons. Saree warned that the weapons aboard the aircraft would be used against the Yemeni people.
Residents reported hearing explosions in Aden as the Yemeni military issued the warning. A local security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a loud explosion rocked the vicinity of Aden International Airport after the Yemeni army fired a ballistic missile toward the area. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.
Aden has come under repeated retaliatory Yemeni army missile strikes in recent days amid escalating fighting between the Yemeni military and forces supported by Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, at least 14 people were killed and 15 others wounded in Saudi airstrikes that hit a market and a fuel station in Yemen’s northern province of al-Jawf on Wednesday.
The Al-Masirah television channel, citing local sources, reported that several airstrikes struck a public market in the provincial capital of al-Hazm, while a separate strike hit the nearby al-Tayseer fuel station, causing casualties at both sites.
Yemen’s Health Ministry said the attack was “a humanitarian disaster and a new massacre,” reporting that 14 civilians, including three children and two women, were killed and 15 others wounded and receiving treatment.
The latest escalation followed Saudi Arabia’s July bombing of Sana’a International Airport. On July 20, the Sana’a government announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia in response to “an unjust and oppressive siege” on Yemen for almost 12 years.
Subsequently, the Yemeni armed forces have reported a series of successful missions targeting vessels associated with Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea. The Yemeni forces have also carried out retaliatory attacks on targets deep inside the kingdom.
In March 2015, Saudi Arabia and its allies imposed a blockade on Yemen, initiating a comprehensive military offensive that received military, political and logistical support from the United States and several Western countries.
Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have been killed; however, Saudi Arabia has failed to achieve its primary goal of reestablishing a puppet government in Yemen that serves its interests.
