TEHRAN -- One of Iran’s
oldest historic centers is drawing renewed attention as heritage experts advance plans to seek UNESCO World Heritage recognition for the ancient city of Rey, where archaeological remains reveal centuries of settlement, cultural exchange and religious life.
At a meeting on the proposed nomination on Wednesday, officials highlighted the city’s archaeological significance and the need for further excavations, research and conservation to strengthen its case for international recognition.
Located south of Tehran, Rey has long held strategic and cultural importance. Its archaeological landscape encompasses ancient settlements, defensive structures, historic monuments and religious sites, offering a glimpse into the successive civilizations that shaped the region.
Among its most notable landmarks are Rashkan Fortress, Cheshmeh Ali Hill, the historic fortifications of Rey, Tughrul Tower and Tappeh Mil. Together, these sites reflect the city’s architectural development and enduring importance as a center of habitation and cultural activity.
