Florida Mass Shooting Leaves 12 Injured, Including 6 Children
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — At least 12 people were injured, including six children, in a shooting Saturday near a football stadium in Tallahassee on homecoming weekend for Florida A&M University, authorities said.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell told reporters that no arrests had been made.
In a statement, police said the preliminary investigation indicates that a fight broke out prior to the shooting. It followed a football game in a crowded area.
Eleven of the victims sustained gunshot wounds, and at least three victims sustained serious injuries, according to police.
The university said on social media that the shooting happened near its campus and that it remained safe.
The shooting took place at around 8 p.m. (12 a.m. GMT) just hours after a homecoming football game at the stadium, where Arkansas–Pine Bluff Golden Lions beat Florida A&M Rattlers 31-28.
It’s unclear whether the shooting was connected to the game. However, Florida A&M University explained that the violence occurred outside its campus area.
“We’re still working the scene. Our detectives, our sergeants, our forensic personnel are all on scene and processing this as we go, taking in as much information as they can,” Revell said.
“As our detectives work to determine exactly what happened and identify those responsible, we remain committed to getting answers for these families.”
Gun violence and mass shootings are a common phenomenon in the United States, with hundreds of fatal attacks on the public, including children and students, reported each year.
U.S. government officials, including members of Congress, have repeatedly ignored calls by gun control advocacy groups for greater weapons controls in the country.
