Third Quantum Technology Lab Opens at Sharif University of Technology

TEHRAN -- Iran inaugurated a teaching laboratory specializing in quantum optics and quantum information at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran on Wednesday, completing the opening of three such facilities at Iranian universities as the country seeks to strengthen its capabilities in advanced technologies.
The laboratory is part of an initiative backed by Iran’s Vice Presidency for Science, Technology and the Knowledge-Based Economy to expand practical training and develop specialist expertise in quantum technologies, Iranian media reported.
The other two laboratories were established at Isfahan University and Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. The facilities are intended to complement theoretical education with hands-on experiments, giving students access to specialized equipment and practical research experience.
Hussein Afshin, Iran’s vice president for science, technology and the knowledge-based economy, said progress in quantum technologies depends not only on theoretical knowledge but also on experimental training and the ability to translate scientific findings into technological capabilities.
He said specialized laboratories could strengthen the link between university education, research and technology development, helping prepare students to participate in advanced scientific projects.
Quantum technologies use the principles of quantum mechanics to develop new approaches to computing, communications, sensing and measurement.
Researchers are exploring applications ranging from quantum computers to secure communications systems and highly sensitive sensors, although many technologies remain at an early stage of development.
The laboratories will support practical

instruction in quantum optics and quantum information, areas that include the study of individual photons, quantum entanglement and methods for transmitting information using quantum systems.
The initiative also aims to increase cooperation among universities and improve access to advanced laboratory infrastructure. Such facilities can help students develop experimental skills, identify research opportunities and build experience with equipment used in specialized scientific work.
Afshin said sustained investment in laboratory infrastructure, technical expertise and domestic equipment development would be necessary to support long-term progress in the field.
He added that expanding the capacity to design and manufacture specialized equipment inside Iran could improve access for academic institutions and reduce reliance on foreign infrastructure.
The program forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Iran’s scientific and technological base and increase the role of universities in developing knowledge-based products and services.
However, the extent to which the new facilities will contribute to commercially viable technologies will depend on continued funding, access to advanced equipment and the development of research programs capable of translating experimental work into practical applications.
