Israel Kills Couple in Gaza, Launches Airstrikes on Lebanon, Ground Raid in Syria
GAZA STRIP (Dispatches) --
Israeli forces carried out strikes and incursions across Gaza, Lebanon and Syria on Tuesday, killing a Palestinian couple in Gaza City and conducting raids and overflights in the other two countries, according to local officials and state media.
An Israeli strike hit a residential apartment near Al-Shifa Medical Complex in western Gaza City before dawn on Tuesday, killing a man and his wife, according to medical sources and the Palestinian news agency Sanad. The victims were identified as Akram Yassin and Dina Abu Bakr.
In southern Gaza, a Palestinian woman was wounded by Israeli gunfire in the Al-Iqlimi area south of Khan Younis, while Israeli military vehicles opened heavy fire on the Al-Mawasi area west of the city and near Salah al-Din Street, according to medical sources.
The strikes came despite a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel that took effect last October; Israeli forces have continued near-daily strikes and shelling across the territory.
More than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
Israeli warplanes carried out an airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Al-Qantara on Tuesday evening, the Lebanese National News Agency reported.
The strikes were part of a broader wave of attacks across southern Lebanon that also targeted areas in Nabatieh, Bint Jbeil, Marjayoun and Tyre districts, according to Anadolu Agency.
Israeli artillery shelled the town of Mansouri and its surrounding valley, while warplanes conducted two waves of strikes near Tallouseh in Marjayoun district.
Israeli troops also carried out two powerful detonations in Qantara, though the targeted sites were not specified. No casualties were immediately reported.
Israel has conducted attacks on Lebanon since March 2, displacing over 1.5 million residents, despite a disgraceful U.S.-sponsored framework agreement signed in June providing for a gradual Israeli withdrawal.
In Syria, an Israeli military force penetrated the village of Taranja in the northern Quneitra countryside on Tuesday, raiding a private home and launching four illumination flares over the area, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Israeli forces also entered the village of al-Samadaniyah in central Quneitra, establishing a temporary checkpoint near a local school before withdrawing.
Separately, Israeli warplanes conducted intensive overflights across vast areas of Syria after midnight, spanning regions near the Syrian-Iraqi border, central and southern Syria, Damascus and its countryside, and the governorates of Dara’a, Quneitra and As-Suwayda, the Observatory reported.
A squadron flew through Syrian airspace toward Iraqi airspace before returning via the same route. The nature of the mission was not confirmed.
The incursions came amid heightened speculation that terrorist prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu could escalate military aggression in Syria ahead of elections scheduled for next week.
