Israel Issues Demolition Notices for Palestinian Farms in Jenin

RAMALLAH (Dispatches) -- Israeli forces shot and wounded a Palestinian during clashes south of Nablus on Monday and issued demolition notices for more than 20 structures in the Jenin area.
A 22-year-old Palestinian was struck by live fire in the shoulder during confrontations in the town of Qaryut, south of Nablus, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance service.
Clashes erupted after residents confronted an attack by settlers on the outskirts of the town, where the settlers had attempted to target a horse stable, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
In the northern West Bank, Israeli forces delivered demolition notices for over 20 agricultural and commercial facilities in Jenin governorate, including greenhouses, agricultural outbuildings, a recreational park, and a car dealership, Wafa reported.
Tariq Ighbariya, the official in charge of the settlements file in Jenin, said the notices threaten the livelihoods of owners and would result in significant financial losses.
Israeli police said Monday they had arrested ten suspects in a pre-dawn operation codenamed “Olive Leaf,” carried out with the Shin Bet security service and military forces, over weekend violence that included the assault of a Washington Post photojournalist and European diplomats near the village of Taybeh.
The suspects were taken for questioning, and vehicles and data-x-items linked to the alleged offenses were seized. Criminal prosecution of Israeli settlers is rare.
The Washington Post’s Heidi Levine was knocked to the ground and kicked on Friday while documenting an attack on Palestinian olive harvesters, and a vehicle carrying European diplomats was damaged in a separate incident on Saturday. The U.S., France, Belgium and Poland have called on Israel to take action.
Also on Monday, settlers attacked the Kaabneh Bedouin community near Taybeh, injuring two Palestinians and targeting an ambulance en route to the area, according to Wafa.
Settlers also attacked olive harvesters in villages across Nablus governorate, assaulting farmers and stealing olives and equipment.
The United Nations has documented over 200 settler attacks during this year’s olive harvest season, surpassing the 185 recorded in the previous season, with more than 120 Palestinians injured and over 2,500 olive trees damaged.
OCHA reported 244 settler incidents resulting in casualties or property damage during a two-week period in early October, an average of 17 per day.
