Top Banker Refutes Claims of Iranian Economy’s Collapse

TEHRAN – Central Bank of Iran Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati dismissed claims that Iran’s economy is on the verge of collapse, saying the country has demonstrated considerable resilience despite the U.S.-Israeli war and Washington’s maximum-pressure sanctions.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund in Bangkok, Hemmati said Iran’s economy has withstood the combined pressure of the war imposed by the U.S. and the Zionist regime and the extensive economic sanctions imposed by Washington.
“Despite all these pressures, the Iranian economy has demonstrated very good resilience, and the claim that Iran’s economy is collapsing is nothing more than an illusion,” he said.
Hemmati outlined the Central Bank’s priorities as containing inflation, stabilizing inflation expectations, maintaining financial stability, and ensuring the continued provision of banking services and payment systems.
He stressed that despite U.S. economic pressure and sanctions, the Central Bank of Iran has played an important role in preserving economic stability by providing foreign currency for the country’s essential goods and medicine and curbing the acceleration of inflation.
Hemmati’s remarks come as U.S. officials have portrayed sanctions and restrictions on Iran’s oil exports as evidence of an imminent economic collapse. In late September, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed Iran would soon exhaust its oil available for sale to China and argued that Tehran was seeking a deal because of mounting economic pressure. U.S. President Donald Trump has similarly asserted that Iran is suffering financially under the pressure campaign.
