Former French PM Slams Europe’s Silence on Trump’s War on Iran, Bullying Tactics
TEHRAN - Former French prime minister Dominique de Villepin has condemned France and the European Union for their continued silence and subservience in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump’s escalating aggression, warning that history will remember Europe as a continent that “had nothing to say” amid American imperial overreach.
In a post on X, de Villepin cataloged a series of unilateral actions by Trump that have directly harmed European interests, sovereignty, and energy security, only to be met with what he described as a cowardly and complicit silence from European capitals.
“Donald Trump violated Venezuela’s sovereignty for an oil deal. We said nothing,” de Villepin wrote, opening his indictment of European paralysis.
He continued, detailing Trump’s attempt to claim sovereignty over Greenland under the pretext of oil interests, noting, “Hoping it would pass, we said nothing.”
De Villepin also condemned the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war against Iran as an “absurd war” that has sent shockwaves through the global economy.
“Donald Trump chose to start an absurd war with Iran, and oil prices surged for everyone. We said nothing,” he stated.
The former prime minister, who famously opposed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq at the United Nations Security Council, highlighted
the direct threat Trump has posed to French citizens’ livelihoods.
He said Trump has threatened to ban the export of American diesel to France, a move that risked sending diesel prices soaring beyond 2.50 Euros to as high as 3 Euros per liter. “We said nothing,” he noted.
He further revealed that Trump demanded G7 countries empty their strategic diesel reserves to artificially lower fuel prices ahead of the crucial US midterm elections in November.
“We said nothing, and we obeyed,” de Villepin wrote, underscoring the extent to which Europe has been reduced to a tool for American domestic political gain.
De Villepin’s post culminated in a direct challenge to the European Union’s political leadership, demanding to know when the bloc will finally act to protect its own interests.
“When will Europe act to immunize itself against American sanctions, to free itself from the grip of technology companies, to set in motion the Anti-Coercion Instrument? When will it speak clearly and with one voice?” he demanded.
De Villepin warned that history would remember Europe’s silence during this period of upheaval. “For when the history of these mad years is written, one thing alone will be remembered: Europe, for its part, had nothing to say.”
While European nations have publicly called for restraint, they have actively enforced illegal US sanctions, participated in maritime coalitions, and allowed their territories to be used as logistical hubs for American aggression against Iran.
