‘A Fox Under a Pink Moon’ Adds Four More Int’l Awards

TEHRAN -- Iranian filmmaker Mehrdad Oskouei and Afghan artist and co-director Soraya Akhlaghi’s documentary A Fox Under a Pink Moon continues its international festival run after collecting a string of major prizes since its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2025.
The film won IDFA’s Best Film in the International Competition, giving it a major launch on the international documentary circuit. It has since received awards at festivals including DOCVILLE in Leuven, Belgium, Tempo Documentary Festival in Stockholm, FIFDH Geneva, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina, ZagrebDox and Millennium Docs Against Gravity in Poland.
At DOCVILLE, the film received both the International Jury Award and the Audience Award. The jury praised its combination of lyrical storytelling, a compelling central character and an urgent subject.
At Sweden’s Tempo Documentary Festival, A Fox Under a Pink Moon won the Stefan Jarl International Documentary Award, while at the Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) it won both the FIFDH Grand Prix de Genève and the Youth Jury Award – Documentary.
The film also won the Full Frame Grand Jury Award and the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies’ Filmmaker Award.
The 77-minute documentary follows Akhlaghi, an Afghan teenager living in Iran, who spent five years filming her life and repeated attempts to leave the country and reunite with her mother in Austria. Shot primarily on mobile phones,
the film combines her personal footage with drawings, sculptures and animation.
The result is an intimate hybrid of documentary, self-portrait and visual diary in which Akhlaghi becomes not only the film’s subject but also its co-director and cinematographer. Festival programmers have highlighted the film’s distinctive form and its treatment of migration, violence, artistic expression and survival.
The film was also selected for major 2026 festivals including Hot Docs, CPH:DOX, the Sydney Film Festival and the SAMA International Film Festival Stockholm.
Its continued festival success has strengthened the film’s profile as one of the year’s notable international documentary titles, while its awards campaign continues across Europe and North America.
