Power Outage Hits Thousands of Homes, Businesses in London
LONDON (The Independent) - A power outage affected thousands of homes and businesses in parts of London on Monday after a fault in an underground electricity network, according to UK Power Networks (UKPN).
Around 32 postcodes, mainly across east London, were affected by the disruption, which began at about 10.32 am.
UKPN, which operates electricity networks across London, southeast England and the east of England, said the outage was caused by a fault in the local underground network.
The disruption affected transport and businesses in the capital. Departure screens at London Liverpool Street station went blank, while some shops and offices were left without electricity. Offices also reported disruptions after Wi-Fi services were cut and computer monitors stopped working.
The Great Northern railway line was also affected, with trains unable to stop at Essex Road station after platform lighting was cut off. Passengers were advised to travel via Old Street or Highbury and Islington and allow extra time for their journeys.
UKPN said it diverted power to restore electricity to 4,989 homes and businesses around 15 minutes after the outage began.
Power was gradually restored, with electricity fully restored across all affected postcodes by the afternoon.
No further details about the cause of the underground network fault were provided.
