SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch of a missile with his daughter, state media reported on Sunday, which allegedly used artificial intelligence to adjust its trajectory. The AI technology means the missile is “capable of changing its flight orbit at a low altitude,” Kim’s powerful sister had said, adding this meant there was “no way to avoid” the attack. It launched from an area around the eastern coastal city of Wonsan early Saturday morning and flew more than 700 kilometers (435 miles), South Korea’s military said, without giving further details.

SAO PAULO (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s campaign has asked the country’s top electoral court to investigate whether the U.S. decision to suspend consular services ahead of Sunday’s presidential election was related to security concerns or constituted election interference, local media reported Saturday. The petition, filed by Lula’s Brasil Pronto Pra Mais coalition with the Superior Electoral Court, argued that the suspension could have portrayed Brazil as unstable on the eve of the vote and benefited opposition candidate Flavio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party. The U.S. Embassy announced Thursday that consular services at the embassy and its consulates in Brazil would be suspended starting Friday, citing “security concerns” without elaborating. U.S. citizens were advised not to visit U.S. diplomatic facilities, while diplomatic personnel were instructed to work remotely.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the Tennessee Department of Correction will step down this month, state officials said on Saturday, days after convicted murderer Christa Pike was left gravely ill from the state’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection. The botched execution on Wednesday left Pike unconscious, intubated and hooked to a mechanical ventilator to breathe, her lawyers wrote in a Friday court filing. It is the state’s second failed execution attempt this year, prompting Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to halt attempts to carry out the death penalty for the rest of 2026. Lee said on Saturday that Frank Strada has resigned as Department of Correction commissioner and would leave his position this month. The governor had ordered an independent review of the execution attempt at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, the state capital.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Thousands of youth protesters and opposition supporters rallied in Delhi and Mumbai on Sunday to demand the resignation of India’s election commission chief over changes to voter rolls, as police detained some demonstrators for a third day. Opposition leaders Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray led protests in Mumbai, calling for the revisions to be scrapped and for Election Commission Chief Gyanesh Kumar to step down. The protesters say the changes benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a charge denied by the Election Commission and the BJP. In the capital, New Delhi, protesters started gathering in the early evening and some were detained by police, according to a Reuters witness.

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Ethiopian government forces and allied militias have regained control of the capital of Tigray, three sources told Reuters on Sunday, dealing a major setback to the opposition alliance that rules the northern region. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which leads the opposition alliance, said in a statement posted on Facebook it had retreated from the capital and that the regional government would be “temporarily moved out of Mekelle and operate from somewhere else.” A source close to the pro-government militia, the Tigray Peace Forces, said its fighters entered the center of Mekelle on Saturday afternoon, followed by the Ethiopian military. A humanitarian source and a Mekelle resident, who asked not to be named, confirmed the city was controlled by government forces.
