U.S. Debt Crisis ‘Only the Beginning,’ Araghchi Tells Bessent

TEHRAN — Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday rebuked U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over his rhetoric about waging economic war on Iran, saying Bessent should instead confront his own failure to stabilize the American bond market amid eroding global trust in the U.S. financial system.
“The U.S. Treasury Secretary has been gleefully boasting about wanting to impoverish Iranians and collapse our economy. Instead, he stands powerless and exposed as the world loses belief in the U.S. financial system,” Araghchi wrote on X, accompanied by an image of Bessent and a graph showing the U.S. bond market under pressure.
“Meltdown over cost of funding U.S. debt is only the beginning,” he added, speaking from New Delhi where he is accompanying President Masoud Pezeshkian to the 18th BRICS summit.
The remarks come as the U.S. war on Iran has intensified pressure on the treasuries market, with interest rates on government bonds hitting a record high amid budget deficits running at around 6 percent of GDP.
In a related development, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, a senior military adviser to the commander-in-chief of Iran’s armed forces, said Thursday that U.S. warmongering has hastened the shift of global power toward the East.
“The U.S. warmongering was the best catalyst for a shift in the global balance of power and economic center of gravity toward the East,” Safavi said, amid escalating tensions in West Asia triggered by U.S. strikes on Iranian oil tankers and Tehran’s
retaliatory strikes against American vessels and bases.
“The attempt to portray it as a victory is a sign of defeat and an acknowledgment that the world is moving toward a multipolar balance of power and international security.”
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed “victory” in the war his administration launched alongside Israel against Iran on February 28. However, the enemies were forced to accept a ceasefire forty days into the conflict amid Iran’s resistance, successful reprisal attacks, and its powerful grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
