TEHRAN - A 10-megawatt solar power plant has been commissioned in the Nazarabad industrial park in Iran’s Alborz Province, supplying electricity to around 100 production units.
The privately developed plant was built on land allocated by the government and is directly connected to the industrial park’s power grid. 
Officials said the expansion of solar power generation in Alborz has also helped the Kosar and Omid industrial parks avoid power cuts linked to nationwide electricity rationing schedules this year.
The location becomes even more significant when viewed through Iran’s industrial structure.
Iran is exceptionally well positioned for solar generation. Research published in 2026 found that many parts of the country contain some of Iran’s most suitable areas for photovoltaic development.
Iran has already been pursuing a broader expansion of renewable capacity, with projects being developed in numerous provinces.
The country has moved from a very small renewable base toward multi-gigawatt projects, while the government has set increasingly ambitious targets for solar and other renewables.
Iran’s traditional energy advantage was based on abundant hydrocarbons. Its emerging energy strategy is increasingly based on using those hydrocarbons more selectively while exploiting an enormous domestic renewable resource.
Instead of using gas as the overwhelming source of electricity generation, Iran could increasingly reserve it for industries and applications where it is more difficult to replace, while solar and wind supply a growing share of electricity.
