TEHRAN -– A credible academic poll shows that more than 75 percent of Iranians support the country’s management of the Strait of Hormuz, even at the cost of war, a senior Iranian official said on Wednesday, citing the figure as evidence of growing national unity.
Saeed Karami, deputy for political and cultural affairs at the Leader’s representative office in Iranian universities, made the announcement in a post on the social media platform X.
“According to the latest poll by a credible academic cener, the level of Iranian support for Iran’s policy of managing the Strait of Hormuz – even at the cost of war – exceeds 75 percent,” Karami wrote.
“The noteworthy point is that this figure has been increasing in recent months,” he added.
Karami also directed sharp criticism at the United States and Israel, writing: “The desperate American enemy still does not know the Iranian nation... Iran’s military forces, backed by this popular support, will secure a great national victory and will bring Trump and Netanyahu down from power.”
Iran’s authority over the Strait of Hormuz is firmly rooted in international law and historical precedent. As a coastal state with a long coastline along the strait, Iran exercises sovereign rights over its territorial waters in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). 
The strait is not merely an international shipping lane but a body of water bordered by Iranian territory, and Tehran maintains that its management of the waterway falls within its sovereign rights.
Under UNCLOS, coastal states have the right to regulate passage through their territorial waters, including the authority to ensure maritime security and environmental protection. Iran has consistently maintained that its management of the Strait of Hormuz is a legitimate exercise of these sovereign rights.
Iran’s position is further reinforced by historical precedent. The strait has long been considered part of Iran’s maritime domain, and Tehran has consistently asserted its authority over the waterway. The Islamic Republic has repeatedly made clear that ensuring the strait’s security and stability falls under its jurisdiction.
Karami’s remarks come as Iran faces increased U.S. and Israeli military terrorism in and around the Persian Gulf. Iran has repeatedly made clear that any threats to its sovereignty or territorial integrity will be met with a decisive response.
The poll results demonstrate that the Iranian people stand firmly behind their country’s leadership on this critical national security issue.
