TEHRAN — Iran’s cinema box office is showing tentative signs of a revival after a prolonged slowdown, with nearly 3.3 million admissions generating 435.1 billion tomans ($2.18 million) in ticket sales since the beginning of the Iranian calendar year on March 21.
Around 20 films have reached theaters during the period, but the recovery remains uneven: no single film has yet crossed the one-million-admission mark, while the market is dominated by a small group of releases.
The Death Bath, directed by Kazem Daneshi, leads the 2026 Iranian box office with about 890,000 admissions and 129.1 billion tomans ($645,000) in sales. The Pool, directed by Soroush Sehhat, follows with 804,000 admissions and 115.6 billion tomans ($578,000), while Antique, directed by Hadi Naeiji, ranks third with 534,000 admissions and 61.6 billion tomans ($308,000).
The concentration of audiences around a handful of films points to a changing pattern in Iranian moviegoing. While star power and a director’s reputation have traditionally played an important role in attracting audiences, reactions circulating on social media suggest that individual scenes widely shared on Instagram and satellite networks are increasingly helping determine which films draw attention.
