Four New Nuclear Industry Achievements Unveiled
TEHRAN — Iran has unveiled and commissioned four knowledge-based achievements of its nuclear industry, including three diagnostic systems for tokamak plasma and a specialized non-destructive testing laboratory, during Government Week, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said on Wednesday.
The systems — a photoelectron system, a bolometry system and a charge-exchange system — are designed to support plasma measurement and the development of future tokamak-based energy systems in Iran.
The fourth project is a laboratory dedicated to non-destructive testing, inspection, training and the assessment of technical personnel.
The projects were unveiled in the presence of Muhammad Eslami, Iran’s vice president and head of the Atomic Energy Organization, along with senior managers from the country’s nuclear industry on Wednesday.
The photoelectron system is a knowledge-based product capable of measuring the electron temperature of tokamak plasma and is intended for use in future tokamak energy production projects in Iran.
The photoelectron spectrometer is a non-contact diagnostic instrument that determines the temperature of plasma electrons by measuring the energy and characteristics of X-rays emitted from the plasma.
Iran has also designed and produced a bolometry system for the first time in the country. The system measures the power lost from tokamak plasma and can be used to optimize plasma performance and support future tokamak energy production.
Bolometry is a conventional diagnostic technique used in most tokamaks to measure energy losses caused by radiation emitted from confined plasma. Its flexible structure allows it to be used widely for this purpose.
The system is used in a number of tokamaks around the world, including large facilities such as KSTAR, EAST and JT-60U.
The third system, the charge-exchange system, was also designed and produced in Iran for the first time. It measures ions in tokamak plasma and is intended for use in future tokamak energy production.
Charge-exchange systems are among the main diagnostic systems used in modern tokamaks to measure plasma temperature. The system measures the temperature of plasma ions using neutral atoms.
The fourth project, a Non-Destructive Testing, or NDT, laboratory, has been launched as a specialized center for testing, inspection, training and assessing the qualifications of technical specialists, with the aim of providing technical and engineering services to various industries in Iran.
The laboratory uses specialized equipment, experienced experts and standardized procedures to conduct non-destructive testing and assess the condition of equipment, components and materials.
Its testing methods include visual testing, penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing and eddy-current testing.
The laboratory will also provide training courses for units across Iran’s nuclear industry and conduct qualification examinations for personnel under the ISO/IEC 9712 standard.
It will provide specialist advice and carry out specific non-destructive tests for the aviation and power industries, MAPNA, the Oil Ministry and the gas industry. It will also conduct digital industrial radiography for special projects and sensitive components for which film-based radiography is not feasible.
The laboratory will inspect companies seeking to conduct non-destructive testing training courses and issue permits for such courses in various industries.
The Atomic Energy Organization said the achievements were the result of sustained work, specialized teamwork and cooperation between the government sector, several knowledge-based companies and scientific and research centers.
The projects are intended to provide advanced specialized services to different Iranian industries while developing domestic capabilities in nuclear technology and related industrial applications.
Separately, Hussein Afshin, Iran’s vice president for science, technology and knowledge-based economy, said the country’s national artificial intelligence platform had been damaged during the 40-day Ramadan war and was among the sites hit in the aggression.
“Knowledge does not disappear,” Afshin said, adding that Iran has reactivated the national artificial intelligence platform one month after the incident and that it is now operating with the same capacity.
Afshin also said Iran has carried out extensive work in microelectronics and established suitable infrastructure and equipment in the field.
Some of that equipment was damaged during the Ramadan war and the 12-day war, he said, adding that replacement and reconstruction efforts are under way.
