TEHRAN – Iran has moved closer to its annual target of reaching 12,000 megawatts (MW) of clean energy following the inauguration of 107 power projects across the country.
 Hamidreza Azimi, Deputy Head of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization of Iran on Wednesday announced that 600 MW of renewable power capacity from 107 projects across 31 provinces was officially brought online.
Officials described this capacity expansion as an initial phase of a broader one-year effort to significantly scale up the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The expansion comes as a recent study by the Islamic Consultative Assembly Research Center estimated Iran’s peak summer electricity deficit at approximately 13,600 MW, a shortage that resulted in widespread power outages.
According to the official, Iran currently ranks third globally behind China and India in terms of the expansion speed of renewable power plants, reflecting strong momentum from both the government and the private sector.
Azimi noted that solar capacity stood at approximately 700 MW at the beginning of the 14th administration, has grown more than sevenfold, and is projected to increase more than 15-fold under ongoing plans.
He attributed this progress to key support from the National Development Fund of Iran and the Central Bank, alongside public tenders that spurred private sector investment.
Iran’s current renewable energy capacity stands at roughly 5,800 MW. According to Azimi, the addition of another 6,200 MW before next year’s peak load period will bring total capacity to 12,000 MW, with solar power accounting for 11,000 MW of these developments.
As part of this initiative, the Governor of Isfahan stated that groundbreaking will soon begin on a major 5,000 MW solar facility. Once operational, the single project is projected to meet roughly 10 percent of Iran’s monthly electricity demand. While India and China currently host the world’s largest single-site solar power plants, the planned facility in Isfahan aims to surpass existing global capacity records.
