Moscow Warns of ‘Consequences’ After Reports UK-Made Drones Hit Russia
LONDON(Dispatches) - Russia has warned Britain it would pay a ‘price’ after reports that UK-made drones supplied to Ukraine had been used in strikes deep inside Russia.
The warning came after the Sunday Times newspaper reported that drones produced by two British companies had been used by Kyiv to hit military and industrial targets inside Russian territory.
In a statement, Russia’s embassy in London accused Britain of becoming “an accomplice and co-perpetrator” of the attacks and of “deliberately opting for an escalation” in the conflict.
“The deeper its involvement in the conflict and the greater its support for Kyiv’s terrorist machinery, the higher the price it will pay,” it said.
According to the Sunday Times, one of the companies involved is a subsidiary of defense giant BAE Systems.
The newspaper did not identify the second company, citing security reasons.
Britain’s defense ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The UK has been one of Ukraine’s strongest backers, committing around 25 billion pounds in support, including 16 billion pounds in military aid.
Ukraine has stepped up long-range strikes inside Russia in recent months, on On Tuesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Britain would support Ukraine “100%” against Russia and remain at its side “in its hour of need”.
“The deeper its involvement in the conflict and the greater its support for Kiev’s (Kyiv’s) terrorist machinery, the higher the price it will pay.”
Burnham said this was the “UK doing what it has long said it would do, which is to support Ukraine 100% against this illegal war” led by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We are not fair-weather friends. We will be there in Ukraine’s hour of need, and that won’t change.”
