TEHRAN – The capital Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad are set to observe mourning ceremonies commemorating the 40th day since the funeral and burial of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
According to a statement issued Sunday by the Office of Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the current Leader will oversee the commemorative events. 
The main ceremony will be held in Tehran on August 18 at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla, between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time, with large crowds expected to gather for prayers and tribute.
Additional ceremonies will take place at the holy shrine of Hazrat Fatima Masoumeh in Qom on August 19, followed by observances at the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad on August 20.
Ayatollah Khamenei, who led the Islamic Revolution for decades, was martyred in a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Tehran on February 28, 2026, at the outset of what Iran describes as a 40-day unprovoked war of aggression against the country.
His body was laid to rest on July 10 next to the holy shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, following days of massive farewell ceremonies across Tehran, Qom, and the Iraqi shrine cities of Najaf and Karbala. 
Millions of mourners from across Iran and dozens of countries participated in the final ceremonies, bringing days of nationwide mourning to their climax at the Mashhad shrine.
