Iran Proposes Independent Financial Corridor for BRICS
TEHRAN - The Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has called for the establishment of a dedicated BRICS financial corridor and the integration of national payment networks among member nations during the second day of BRICS financial meetings in India.
at the summit on Wednesday, Hemmati emphasized that financial cooperation within the bloc must move beyond general discussions to build operational, secure, and sustainable infrastructure for cross-border payments and settlements.
According to the CBI chief, interconnecting payment systems and expanding the use of national currencies will reduce reliance on external financial channels.
He noted that this strategy would increase transaction speeds, lower costs, and enhance the security of commercial exchanges among members.
Hemmati added that Iran has already initiated technical, legal, and operational assessments for linking BRICS payment systems and stands ready to assist in drafting an operational roadmap for the initiative.
Furthermore, the Central Bank Governor highlighted Iran’s ongoing bid for membership in the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), framing it as a vital step toward expanding development project financing, boosting investment cooperation, and deepening economic ties across member states.
The CBI chief said Iran believed BRICS members could conduct trade with each other using national currencies, and that Tehran was pursuing bilateral and trilateral monetary cooperation with BRICS member states.
Hemmati said closer cooperation among member states could strengthen stability, trust and sustainable development. He stressed that economic and financial stability cannot be achieved without peace, respect for international law and adherence to the UN Charter.
Hemmati said Iran has actively participated in BRICS working groups since joining the bloc, contributing to discussions on cross-border payments, national currencies, financial technologies, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and sustainable finance.
Hemmati also described the New Development Bank as one of BRICS’ key institutional achievements, saying Iran is ready to expand engagement with the bank and pursue membership with the support of other members.
He said BRICS could play a more effective role in shaping a more inclusive, balanced and resilient international financial architecture.
Hemmati also met his Indian counterpart Sanjay Malhotra to discuss global economic and financial developments, bilateral banking cooperation and ways to facilitate trade and economic exchanges between Iran and India.
