Official Vows ‘Appropriate’ Response to U.S. Attack on Nuclear Site
TEHRAN -- An Iranian deputy foreign minister says Tehran will take “appropriate” measures to defend its national interests and security following a U.S. attack on the construction site of the Darkhoveyn nuclear power plant in Khuzestan province.
In a post on X, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi strongly condemned the U.S. aggression and said the attack on the power plant, which is currently under construction, represented a “dangerous assault.”
He held the United States fully responsible for the consequences of escalation of insecurity and instability in the region, saying, “The U.S. attack on the Darkhoveyn power plant, which is under construction, is a dangerous assault on Iran’s peaceful infrastructure.”
Earlier, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) condemned the “terrorist” U.S. attack on the Darkhoveyn nuclear power plant, saying the strike violated international law and targeted a peaceful nuclear facility which is under international safeguards.
According to a statement released by the AEOI, the attack occurred at around 3:39 a.m. local time on Sunday, when the United States launched “a number of projectiles” at the site under construction.
In a post on its X account, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it is looking into reports of an overnight attack on the construction site of the Darkhoveyn nuclear power plant in Iran.
“While the reported attack is not believed to pose any radiological risk, DG @rafaelmgrossi reiterates call for military restraint in the vicinity of all nuclear-related sites,” the UN nuclear agency added.
It confirmed contacts with Iranian officials about the public reports and noted that further information will be provided as it becomes available.
