Iran Secures 14th AFC Futsal Crown in Thrilling Finale

TEHRAN — Iran’s national futsal team secured its 14th Asian title on Saturday, edging host nation Indonesia 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout following a 5-5 draw in regulation and extra time at the 19th AFC Futsal Championship final.
The match, held in Indonesia, was a showcase of resilience and determination from both sides. Iran advanced to the final after victories over Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan in the group stage, followed by knockout wins against Uzbekistan and Iraq. Indonesia reached the final by defeating South Korea and Kyrgyzstan, drawing with Iraq, and overcoming Vietnam and Japan in later rounds.
Iran’s starting lineup featured Bagher Muhammadi, Muhammad Hussein Derakhshani, Mehdi Karimi, Salar Aghapour, and Behrouz Azimi. Iran’s goals were scored by Hussein Tayebi, Mehdi Karimi (two), Saeed Ahmadabbasi, and Salar Aghapour.
The match began with Iran adjusting to the atmosphere in the stadium, which appeared to favor the Indonesian side early on. Tayebi opened the scoring for Iran within three minutes, but defensive lapses allowed Indonesia to respond quickly with three goals, putting the hosts in front.
Iran struggled with missed opportunities in the first half, and a goal by Ahmadabbasi was disallowed after video review confirmed the ball had gone out of bounds before entering the net. A subsequent penalty taken by Aghapour was saved by the Indonesian goalkeeper. Late in the first half, a free-kick goal by Karimi brought Iran back to 2-3, giving the team momentum heading into the second half.
Iran equalized early in the second half when Ahmadabbasi scored, only for Indonesia to respond with their fourth goal. Iran’s attacks were repeatedly thwarted by the opposing goalkeeper, while shots from Karimi and other players struck the goalposts. With three minutes remaining, Iran implemented a power-play strategy that paid off when Karimi scored, leveling the score at 4-4 and sending the game into extra time.
Both teams adopted cautious strategies in the first half of extra time. Despite creating opportunities, Iran failed to break through, while Indonesia briefly regained the lead on a defensive error. Salar Aghapour’s well-placed shot restored parity, taking the match to penalties.
Indonesia converted their first two penalties, while Iran’s Masoud Yousef missed the opener. Derakhshani scored Iran’s second penalty, and Ahmadabbasi added the third. Goalkeeper Mehdi Rostamiha saved Indonesia’s fourth shot, allowing Aghapour to score for Iran. Indonesia converted their fifth, but Tayebi and Iran’s final penalty taker, Hussein Sabzi, ensured a 5-4 victory, cementing Iran’s 14th championship.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian congratulated the national team in a statement, calling the triumph “a proud achievement and a testament to the determination, unity, and skill of the country’s youth.” He highlighted the contributions of players, coaching staff, and all those involved in the team’s success.
“This sweet victory, the result of the players’ efforts, coaches’ strategies, and the dedication of the entire

support team, is a source of national pride,” the president said, wishing the players continued health, honor, and success in international competitions.
The championship win underscores Iran’s longstanding dominance in Asian futsal, maintaining its position as the region’s leading team and highlighting the depth of talent and commitment among Iranian players.
The final, marked by dramatic swings in momentum and a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, captivated futsal fans across the region. It also demonstrated Iran’s ability to perform under pressure and adapt strategically, particularly in the latter stages of regulation and extra time.
Iran’s victory adds to an illustrious record in the AFC Futsal Championship, reinforcing the team’s reputation as a powerhouse in Asian futsal and inspiring a new generation of young athletes in the country.
