Iraq Bans U.S.-Based Roblox Over Sexual Content
BAGHDAD (Dispatches) – Iraq has banned the popular U.S.-based gaming platform Roblox, citing concerns over sexual content, blasphemy, and risks of online blackmail targeting minors, the communications ministry said.
The ban, ordered by the country’s Supreme Court, aims to “protect social order, preserve moral values” and ensure internet safety for Iraqi users.
Roblox, which allows players to create and share their own games, has faced repeated criticism globally over its failure to adequately protect young users.
The Iraqi ministry highlighted features allowing direct communication between users, warning this exposes children to exploitation and blackmail attempts. It also pointed to content violating local social norms.
The move is part of a wider crackdown on electronic games deemed harmful to Iraqi society.
The Ministry of Interior announced plans to ban several other games, including PUBG and Fortnite, citing threats to social security and concerns about the waste of children’s time and money.
The ban will be enforced over the coming months under Law No. 2 of 2013, which prohibits games promoting violence and content threatening security.
Authorities have launched campaigns to confiscate banned violent games, with coordination between the Ministry of Trade, police, and security agencies.
Psychologist Faleh Al-Quraishi warned of a rise in “screen addiction” among Iraqi children, likening it to chemical addiction, which impacts social skills and academic performance. He noted that excessive screen time can lead to anxiety, social isolation, and decreased concentration in schoolchildren.
Around 100 million people use Roblox daily worldwide, with children under 13 comprising about 40% of its users, according to the company.
