Venezuela Thanks Iran for Support Against U.S. Buildup
TEHRAN – Iran and Venezuela reaffirmed their close ties and condemned what they described as aggressive U.S. military actions in the Caribbean, following a phone call between their foreign ministers on Monday.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto thanked Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for Tehran’s support in defending the principles of the United Nations Charter, emphasizing respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The call came a week after the United States deployed eight warships, a submarine, and F-35 warplanes to the Caribbean, citing concerns over drug trafficking from Venezuela. The U.S. also authorized a strike that killed 11 people it claimed were members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, which Washington links to narcotics operations – an allegation rejected by Caracas.
Pinto reiterated Venezuela’s determination to protect its independence and sovereignty, calling on BRICS member countries and South American nations to take a firm stance against what he described as U.S. hostile actions.
Araghchi condemned the U.S. military buildup and threats, describing them as violations of the UN Charter and a threat to international peace and security. He expressed Iran’s solidarity with Venezuela amid escalating tensions.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said the U.S. military presence was part of an effort to destabilize his government, warning his armed forces were prepared to defend the country.
