Iraq’s Resistance Forces Reject Western Pressure to Disarm

BAGHDAD (Dispatches) – The secretary-general of Iraq’s Kata’ib Hezbollah, Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi, has rejected calls for the disarmament of resistance groups in Iraq and Lebanon, saying such efforts are part of a broader foreign agenda aimed at weakening regional security and sovereignty.
In a statement published by the group’s media office, Hamidawi said that the demand for resistance groups to lay down their arms was “illegitimate and politically motivated,” linking it to recent regional developments, including efforts to overthrow the Syrian government, the Saudi-led war on Yemen, and ongoing pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“Arms of resistance are a legitimate right and a protective shield against occupation and aggression,” he said, adding that weapons remain essential for defending national dignity, sanctities, and independence.
He further accused international institutions of operating under the influence of “Zionist and Masonic” powers, and criticized what he called a double standard in how Western governments approach resistance groups and their adversaries.
Hamidawi also called for strengthening the military capabilities of the resistance, including advanced weaponry and enhanced technical expertise, in order to counter any future threats. “We must continue developing both our defensive and offensive capacities,” he said.
Reaffirming support for the Palestinian cause, Hamidawi stated that the Palestinian issue remains “the central priority of the Muslim Ummah,” and pledged full readiness to defend Islamic sanctities against Israeli actions.
His comments come amid renewed Western pressure on resistance groups in the region. On Thursday, Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi, leader of Iraq’s Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, warned against foreign interference, stating that any military action by the United States, Britain, or Israel would be met with a “harsh and comprehensive response.”
“We reject any external interference in Iraq’s sovereignty and decision-making,” al-Kaabi said.
In Lebanon, secretary-general of Hezbollah, Sheikh Naim Qassem, also reiterated that the group would not disarm, declaring its readiness to continue fighting against Israeli aggression.
Resistance groups, including Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), have faced increasing scrutiny and legal challenges. Iraqi lawmakers have been unable to pass legislation formalizing the PMU’s role, with some officials citing U.S. opposition as the key obstacle.
