UK Military Contractor Dies Suddenly Before Hair Transplant in Turkey

ISTANBUL (Dispatches) -- A British man, Martyn Latchman, 38, from Milton Keynes, died last week in Istanbul after falling ill during the preparatory phase of a hair transplant procedure at the Dr Cinik clinic in Besiktas.
Latchman, who had left a 16-year teaching career last year to work as a defense contractor, was undergoing a second hair transplant, having had a successful procedure at the same clinic the previous summer.
The clinic, known for treating high-profile clients including former England footballer Rio Ferdinand, said it was unclear why Latchman became unwell before the operation began.
He was immediately transferred to a nearby university hospital’s intensive care unit but passed away later that day. Turkish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Dr Cinik’s statement confirmed that all necessary medical tests—including blood work, chest X-ray, and ECG—were completed under anesthesiologist supervision before the procedure.
The clinic emphasized that the patient was cleared for surgery and denied reports that he died during the transplant or that the operation was interrupted.
The clinic, which claims to have performed over 70,000 hair transplants, expressed deep sadness over Latchman’s death and noted that all relevant medical documents have been handed over to judicial authorities. Due to the ongoing investigation and respect for the family’s privacy, no further details have been disclosed.
Latchman’s body has been repatriated to the UK, where the Foreign Office confirmed it is supporting his family and remains in contact with Turkish officials. Originally from Bridgend, south Wales, Latchman was previously assistant headteacher and head of computer science at Goldington Academy in Bedford.
