Lawmakers Move to Strengthen Armed Forces
TEHRAN -- In a decisive move reflecting Iran’s commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and regional stability, the parliament is advancing a significant bill aimed at increasing military spending to strengthen the Armed Forces.
The parliament’s Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy on Sunday approved the general outline of the legislation after a comprehensive session attended by senior officials from the Defense Ministry, General Staff of the Armed Forces, the Islamic Republic Army, and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).
The bill, sponsored by Tehran representative Ali Khezrian, has garnered the support of 120 lawmakers so far, underscoring the broad consensus among Iranian legislators on the need for robust defense capabilities.
Deputy Defense Minister Reza Talayee-Nik emphasized the ministry’s urgent request for expanded budgetary resources to meet the country’s growing defense requirements amid escalating regional tensions.
“The Army will not allow even an inch of Iran’s soil to be separated,” a senior commander reiterated, emphasizing Iran’s unwavering resolve to protect its territorial integrity.
This legislative initiative follows a recent 12-day war of aggression launched by the Israeli regime last month, during which multiple Iranian military and civilian facilities were targeted in a series of coordinated airstrikes. These attacks resulted in the martyrdom of over 1,000 Iranians, including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists, deepening Iran’s resolve to respond firmly to hostile actions against the nation.
In retaliation, Iran launched Operation True Promise III, a sweeping counteroffensive that targeted critical Israeli military, intelligence, and industrial infrastructure.
Utilizing hundreds of ballistic
missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), the Iranian Armed Forces overwhelmed Israel’s anti-missile defenses, inflicting extensive damage across major cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Be’er Sheva.
The retaliatory strikes also extended to a key U.S. military installation at Al-Udeid Air Base, located in Qatar, after the United States escalated its involvement by bombing three Iranian nuclear facilities.
The escalation of hostilities compelled the Israeli regime to announce a unilateral halt to its aggression on June 24, a decision publicly communicated by the President of the United States.
In tandem with military reinforcement, Iran’s parliament has also passed critical revisions to the bill intensifying penalties for espionage, collaboration, and economic or technological assistance to hostile foreign regimes, particularly targeting the Zionist regime and the United States.
The revised legislation, passed overwhelmingly on July 14th, codifies severe punishments including the death penalty and confiscation of property for any intelligence or operational activity deemed detrimental to national security. Lesser offenses that fall short of “corruption on earth” are punishable by life imprisonment.
Additionally, the bill criminalizes the use and possession of illegal communication devices such as Starlink when employed for subversive purposes. It also targets cyberattacks, espionage drones, and the dissemination of sensitive or harmful information to foreign media outlets.
Any filming, broadcasting, or publication of content that undermines national morale or unity could result in imprisonment and permanent disqualification from public service. To facilitate enforcement, Iran’s Intelligence Ministry has been tasked with identifying “hostile media” and overseeing expedited legal procedures for related offenses.
Iranian lawmakers emphasized that these legislative and military measures are essential to defend the nation against growing external threats amid a volatile regional environment. The broad parliamentary support reflects a unified stance against aggression and espionage, signaling Tehran’s readiness to confront any attempts at undermining its sovereignty.
This comprehensive approach combines enhanced military preparedness with stringent legal frameworks to protect Iran’s national security, sovereignty, and the morale of its people.
