Condolences Continue to Pour in Over Fire Tragedy
TEHRAN - Condolences continue to pour in from countries following a deadly explosion at a sprawling port in Bandar Abbas, which killed over 70 people and wounded more than 1,000 others.
on Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian over the deadly explosion
Xi sent a message to his Iranian counterpart, Chinese media reported.
“I was shocked to hear of the severe explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran, and the heavy casualties and financial losses it has caused,” the Chinese president said in his message.
“On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, the injured, and those affected,” he added.
Also on Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani called Pezeshkian to offer condolences on behalf of the Iraqi government and people.
“I deeply regret this tragic incident at Shahid Rajaee Port. I had hoped our conversation would take place under different circumstances,” al-Sudani told the Iranian president.
He extended his condolences to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the president, and the Iranian people.
Pezeshkian, in his call with the Iraqi prime minister, expressed gratitude for Iraq’s solidarity and assured that efforts to determine the exact cause of the explosion were underway.
“Our priority has been containing the fire and stabilizing the situation, which is now under control thanks to emergency response teams,” the president said, adding that cleanup operations were ongoing and preventive measures were being taken to avoid future incidents.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidovhas also extended condolences to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi following the tragedy at Shahid Rajaee Port.
In their messages, the ministers expressed deep regret over the tragic incident and conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to Araghchi, the families of the victims, and the Iranian people.
The two officials also wished a swift recovery for those injured in the incident. Several ambassadors, diplomats, and representatives of foreign countries paid tribute to the victims of the tragic fire at Shahid Rajaee Port by visiting the Iranian Embassy in London and signing a memorial book dedicated to those who lost their lives.
Iranian Ambassador to Britain Ali Mousavi welcomed the foreign representatives and received their messages of condolence and sympathy addressed to the Iranian government and people.
According to a statement by the embassy, the memorial office will be open for two days (April 29 and 30) to honor the victims of the tragedy.
Earlier, the embassy shared a message on X, expressing condolences to the bereaved families. “We offer our condolences to the noble Iranian nation for this heartbreaking incident in Bandar Shahid Rajaee and pray to God Almighty to have mercy on the deceased and grant a speedy recovery to the injured,” the post read.
The embassy also said that its flag had been lowered to half-mast.
A massive explosion rocked Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas on Saturday. Authorities said on Monday that the fire had been contained and port operations had returned to normal.
