The spokeswoman noted that the U.S. would have not needed to impose new sanctions or update them against Iran if the previous ones had been effective.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Thursday designated Paknejad, accusing him of overseeing the export of tens of billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian oil.
