Calls Grow on Countries to Halt Arms Shipments to Israel

NEW DELHI (Dispatches) – A group of prominent figures in India have called on Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to halt arms shipments to the Zionist regime.
According to Indian media, former judges of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, economists and activists sent a letter to Defense Minister Singh, which read, “India should immediately suspend its cooperation with Israel on the shipment of military munitions and immediately make every effort to ensure that arms delivered to Israel are not used in genocide or violations of international humanitarian law.”
The figures demanded a review of all licenses issued to Indian companies to export military weapons and munitions to Israel. They called for continuing to keep details of export licenses, including the countries to which they are exported, available to the public. The figures also explained that the government granted licenses to at least three arms companies to export weapons to the Zionist regime during the war on Gaza and even after the International Court of Justice issued its decisions. The figures stressed that India is committed to various international laws and agreements that oblige it not to export military weapons to countries that commit war crimes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has not made any statement about sending arms to Israel, but previous press reports have confirmed that New Delhi is supplying weapons to Israel.
Meanwhile, a French lawmaker needs just over 600 more signatures to complete his online campaign, in which he asks President Emmanuel Macron’s government to halt arms sales to Israel, Anadolu Agency reports.
34,327 people had signed the online petition launched by Thomas Portes, a lawmaker from the La France Insoumise, or France Unbowed (LFI) party, to urge the French government to halt arms sales to Israel.
The campaign is still active on change.org and requires less than 700 more signatures to be successful.
However, it is unclear what steps the French lawmaker will take after collecting 35,000 signatures.
According to the defense ministry’s July 2023 report to Parliament, France has issued 767 export licenses for Israel since 2015.
In addition, France sells an average of €20 million (nearly $22 million) worth of military equipment to Israel every year.
The value of military equipment shipped from France to Israel in 2013-2022 amounted to €207.6 million ($227 million).
