Achaemenid Tablets Repatriated From U.S. on Display
TEHRAN – As many as 163 Achaemenid tablets repatriated from the United States last year have been showcased at the National Museum of Iran.
After more than 85 years, President Ebrahim Raisi brought back 3,506 Achaemenid tablets from the U.S. during his visit to New York to attend the UN General Assembly meeting in September 2023.
The tablets showcased at the National Museum of Iran on Saturday were put on display in a ceremony attended by the deputy minister of Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization, and foreign ambassadors.
So far, five shipments of the tablets to Iran have been completed, according to the director of the National Museum of Iran.
The Achaemenid tablets are among the most important works of Iranian art and history. They contain vital insights into road resource management, social relations, basic necessities of life, wages, and the economy of Achaemenid society.
The tablets, inscribed in cuneiform, Elamite, and Aramaic languages, provide a unique window into the world of one of the most powerful empires in history.
