Shahrzad Playhouse to Stage ‘Robinson and Crusoe’
TEHRAN – ‘Robinson and Crusoe’, an Italian play by Nina Dintrona and Giacomo Ravicio, will be staged at Sharzad Playhouse Complex in Tehran from Tuesday.
Inspired by the acclaimed novel Robinson Crusoe by English writer, trader, journalist and pamphleteer Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), the plot is centered on two soldiers, Robinson and Crusoe, cast away on a deserted island.
In the Iranian rendition of the play, the roles will be performed by Sa’eed Borj-Ali and Hussein Jeddi.
Despite its simple narrative style, Robinson Crusoe was well received in the literary world and is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. It is generally seen as a contender for the first English novel.
The antiwar play portrays how humans leave enmity and turn to mutual understanding amid a violent struggle to survive which also has a layer of satire.
