Shahrzad Playhouse to Stage ‘Robinson and Crusoe’

TEHRAN – ‘Robinson and Crusoe’, an Italian play by Nina Dintrona and Giacomo Ravicio, will be staged at Sharzad Playhouse ‎Complex in Tehran from Tuesday.‎
‎Inspired by the acclaimed novel Robinson Crusoe by English writer, trader, journalist and pamphleteer Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), the plot is centered on two soldiers, Robinson and Crusoe, cast away on a deserted island.
In the Iranian rendition of the play, the roles will be performed by Sa’eed Borj-Ali and Hussein Jeddi.
Despite its simple narrative style, Robinson Crusoe was well received in the literary world and is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. It is generally seen as a contender for the first English novel.
The antiwar play portrays how humans leave enmity and turn to mutual understanding amid a violent struggle to survive which also has a layer of satire.
