Iranian FM Mourns Death of Belarus Counterpart
TEHRAN -- Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir-Abdollahian offered his condolences on the death of his Belarusian counterpart Vladimir Makei.
In a message on Saturday night, the top Iranian diplomat said he is deeply saddened by the Belarusian foreign minister’s death.
Expressing condolences to the government and nation of Belarus, Amir-Abdollahian paid tribute to late Makei for his sincere efforts and precious role in the expansion of relations between Tehran and Minsk during his tenure.
Belarus’s long-standing foreign minister died on Saturday, two days before he was meant to meet his Russian counterpart. Makei had held his post since 2012.
Makei, 64, attended a conference of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) - a military alliance of several post-soviet states - in Yerevan earlier this week and was due to meet Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Monday.
