U.S. Military Base in Syria Targeted in Rocket Attack
DAMASCUS (Al Jazeera) – A rocket attack has been launched against the United States military’s Green Village base in northeast Syria, the U.S. Central Command confirmed.
Three 107-mm (4.2-inch) rockets attacked the base on Sunday and a fourth rocket along with rocket tubes was found at the launch point, about five kilometers (three miles) away, the command said in a statement.
The Green Village base was hit last month during violence between the U.S. military and the attackers leaving at least one U.S. military service member in Syria with an injury.
The Central Command said it was investigating the latest attack, which struck at approximately 7:05pm local time (16:05 GMT) in Syria.
It gave no further details.
In last month’s attack, at least two fighters were also killed, in what the U.S. military described as rocket attacks on two facilities.
It said that several rockets landed inside the perimeter of Mission Support Site Conoco in northeast Syria, quickly followed by another near Mission Support Site Green Village, run by the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed Kurdish-led group.
The developments came a day after the U.S. said it had carried out raids in Dayr al-Zawr, a strategic oil-rich province that borders Iraq.
The U.S. forces have been actively involved in Syria under the pretext of fighting the terrorist group of Daesh.
Washington has extended the troops’ presence in Syria since 2017, although, the Arab country and its allies defeated the terror outfit that year.
Numerous reports and regional officials have, meanwhile, pointed to the U.S.’s role in transferring Daesh’s elements throughout the region and even airlifting supplies to the group.
The U.S. military has stationed forces and equipment in northeastern Syria, with the Pentagon claiming that the deployment is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh’s remnants.
Damascus, however, maintains that the deployment is aimed at plundering the country’s rich oil and mineral resources, and says it reserves the right to expel the American troops through appropriate means.
