Navy Chief:

Iran Able to Establish Persian Gulf Security

TEHRAN (Press TV) -- Iran’s navy commander says the military capabilities of the country are at such a level that the Islamic Republic can establish security and stability in the waters south of the country, including in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
"We have repeatedly said that the navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran can control the Strait of Hormuz, and establish security in the strait, the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman,” Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said in an interview with the Lebanese al-Ahd weekly, published on Thursday.
He said Iran’s continuing efforts for improving its naval capability are meant to boost security in the region.
"We seek security in the region and view it as one of our principal matters; and improving our capability in the naval field is for establishing security,” he said.
Sayyari announced late in January that Iran and Oman plan to hold a joint rescue and relief drill in the waters south of Iran in the coming months. According to reports, the maritime drill is scheduled to be held east of the Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman sometime between April 21 and May 21.
Iran’s navy also participated in the Muhammad Rasoulollah drill, a series of wide-scale military exercises held late last September, which saw Iranian naval forces show the level of their readiness to confront potential threats in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
