Pedro Fires Flamengo Into Copa Libertadores Semifinals
RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Former Fiorentina striker Pedro struck a second-half goal as Flamengo advanced to the Copa Libertadores semifinal on Tuesday with a 1-0 home victory over Brazilian rival Corinthians in the second leg of their quarterfinal.
Pedro put the hosts ahead on the night by sliding home at the far post after Gabriel Barbosa’s diagonal cross in the 52nd minute.
The 25-year-old has now netted eight times in 10 matches in the current Copa Libertadores campaign.
The visitors were dealt a further blow in the 68th minute when Bruno Mendez was shown a straight red card for a deliberate hand ball on the edge of Flamengo’s penalty area.
The result at the Maracana stadium gave Flamengo a 3-0 win on aggregate after the Rio de Janeiro outfit prevailed 1-0 in last week’s first leg at Corinthians Arena.
