Sadr Supporters Storm Iraq Parl’t to Protest PM Choice

BAGHDAD (Dispatches) – Hundreds of supporters of firebrand cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have breached Iraq’s parliament building to protest selection of a consensus nominee for prime minister following months of uncertainty. Reports said only security forces were inside the building in Baghdad and they appeared to allow the protesters in with relative ease. The breach by Sadr’s typically unruly supporters was in reaction to the recent nomination of Mohammed al-Sudani as Iraq’s new prime minister. They also breached Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone where riot police used water cannons to repel demonstrators pulling down cement blast walls.
