Syria Urges UN to Clearly Condemn Zionist Breach of Sovereignty
DAMASCUS (Dispatches) – Syria has urged the United Nations and its Security Council to issue a “clear” condemnation of the Zionist regime’s recurrent attacks on the Arab country’s territory.
Writing a letter to the UN secretary-general and the president of the Security Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said the country hoped the two bodies would “adopt a clear position on the Israeli attacks on Syrian sovereignty,” the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Saturday.
Such unequivocal position, the letter added, should be “away from politicized considerations and calculations that contradict the well-established and clear legal and political positions of the United Nations and its bodies.”
The ministry also urged the UN to demand that the Zionist aggressor abide by the relevant Security Council resolutions and to immediately and unconditionally stop threatening regional and international peace and security.
The letter was sent a day after the Zionist regime carried out fresh airstrikes on Syria’s northwestern province of Hama, killing at least five people, including a civilian, and injuring seven others, including a female child.
The Russian military said Syrian air defense units intercepted most of the missiles fired during the recent raid on the Arab country’s western-central province, and shot down more than a dozen projectiles during the attack that had been fired over the Mediterranean.
“Between 20:25 p.m. local time (1725 GMT) and 20:32 on May 13, six F-15 tactical fighter aircraft of the Israeli air force, without penetrating into the Syrian Arab Republic’s airspace, attacked the facilities of the Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC) in the city of Masyaf and the port of Baniyas,” Rear Admiral Oleg Zhuravlev, deputy head of Russia’s Reconciliation Center for Syria, said in a statement.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the Zionist regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups that are wreaking havoc in the country.
