GRANDE-SYNTHE, France (AP) --- French police have evacuated migrants from a makeshift camp near Dunkirk, in northern France, where at least 1,500 people gathered in hopes of making it across the English Channel to Britain. The Prefecture of the region said more than 400 people agreed to go to shelters. “The operation is continuing,” the statement said. The operation is meant to send migrants into “adapted facilities” where they are to be informed of their rights, including the possibility to request asylum in France, it said.

MERRITT, British Columbia (Reuters) - Floods and landslides that have killed at least one person have cut all rail access to Canada’s largest port in the city of Vancouver, a spokesperson for the port said. Two days of torrential rain across the Pacific province of British Columbia touched off major flooding and shut rail routes operated by Canadian Pacific Rail and Canadian National Railway, Canada’s two biggest rail companies. “All rail service coming to and from the Port of Vancouver is halted because of flooding in the British Columbia interior,” port spokesperson Matti Polychronis said. At least one person was killed when a mudslide swept cars off Highway 99 near Pemberton, some 100 miles (160 km) to the northeast of Vancouver. Two people were missing and search and rescue crews were combing through the rubble, officials said.

KAMPALA, Uganda (CNN) -The terrorist group of Daesh has claimed responsibility for two separate suicide attacks that killed three people and injured 36 in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, on Tuesday. Two civilians and a police officer were killed in the blasts, police spokesperson Fred Enanga told reporters at a news conference in the city. The Daesh-affiliated Amaq News Agency reported the incident on its Telegram channel on Tuesday, saying three fighters set out with bags loaded with explosives. Two headed toward the Kampala Central Police Station, and the third to the parliament building, where they detonated, it reported.

WARSAW (Dispatches) - Poland has warned that the migration crisis along its border with Belarus could continue for months as the situation continues to deteriorate on the European Union’s eastern frontier. Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said on Wednesday that it was necessary “to prepare for the fact that the situation … will not be resolved quickly”, with thousands of asylum seekers and refugees seeking to enter the EU currently stranded in freezing conditions between the two countries.
