Iran to Use Kyrgyzstan as Corridor to SCO Region
TEHRAN - Iranian Minister of Transport and Urban Development Rostam Qassemi has held a meeting with Kyrgyzstan Minister of Economy and Commerce Daniyar Amangeldiev to discuss development of transport and transit ties and cooperation between the two countries.
Considering recent membership of Iran in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Iran can use Kyrgyzstan as a corridor to the countries in the SCO region and similarly Kyrgyzstan can access the Eastern and Southeastern countries via Iran, Qassemi said during the meeting.
“Currently there is a possibility for rail transit from Bandar Abbas to Kyrgyzstan and considering existing agreement with Turkmenistan, it can be further developed…moreover air transport can also be expanded,” he added.
Joint commerce and investment, exporting technical and engineering services, tourism, and agricultural issues were also discussed.
The Kyrgyz minister, for his part, proposed formation of a joint economic development fund to support common projects which was welcomed by the Iranian Minister.
The two sides also agreed to make preparations for realizing agreements achieved during previous joint commission.
Iran and Kyrgyzstan held the 12th meeting of their Joint Economic Committee on 3 December 2019.
