Iran Beat Lebanon to Move Closer to 2022 FIFA World Cup
TEHRAN – Iran National Football Team defeated Lebanon 2-1 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification on Thursday.
Team Melli came back from a goal down to win the match at the Saida Municipal Stadium in Sidon.
Soony Saad put the hosts into the lead in the 37th minute but Sardar Azmoun and Ahmad Nourollahi scored two goals in added time to keep Team Melli on top of the table.
Earlier in the day, South Korea edged the UAE 1-0 in Seoul.
Dragan Skocic’s team will play Syria in Amman, Jordan on Tuesday and will move one more step closer to qualification if they defeat the Syrian team.
Iran now lead Group A with 13 points, followed by South Korea with 11 points and Lebanon with five points.
The top two finishers in each of the two six-team groups in Asia will qualify directly for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The two third-placed teams will then face each other in a two-legged playoff, with the winner of that tie entering an intercontinental playoff.
