Iran Plans Petrochemical Hub in Kermanshah

TEHRAN (Dispatches) – Iran has devised plans to convert the western province of Kermanshah into the third petrochemical hub of the country.
Addressing a ceremony to break grounds for construction of west Islamabad petrochemical plant on Saturday, Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh said: "We are trying to implement this project by making maximum use of the industrial and contracting capacities of Kermanshah province.”
Ground was broken for the construction of a new petrochemical complex in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah with a total budget of $550 million.
Jahangiri also said, "This project is one of the most important petrochemical projects in the country and can activate several downstream industries and further boost industrial development in Kermanshah province,” The project is expected to cost $545 million and create more than 5,000 jobs. The petrochemical facility will produce polypropylene from natural gas.
It has a capacity of producing 660 thousand tonnes of methanol, 120 thousand tonnes of propylene and 120 thousand tonnes of polypropylene annually.
"For years I was trying to run this project in the country because we would gain the technology of turning natural gas into valuable forms of plastic,” Zangeneh said.
"The West Islamabad Petrochemical Complex is a major project worth around $600 million,” said the minister.
"It will create thousands of jobs and upgrade the technological level of the province tremendously,” he noted.
"When the project becomes operations, Kermanshah province will get its fourth petrochemical facility and will rank third in the country as far as the capacity for the petrochemical products is concerned,” he said.
Petrochemical Plant to Be Fully Iranian
The CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Behzad Muhammadi said Islamabad west petrochemical plant would be fully Iranian and built by relying on domestic savvy and experts.
Addressing the ceremony, Muhammadi said that the most important feature of the Islamabad West Petrochemical Project is that it is Iranian, and added: "The total technology and catalyst of all three parts of methanol, propylene and polypropylene of the project will be developed by researchers of the Petrochemical Research and Technology Company.”
The official stated that the Islamabad-West petrochemical project is one of the strategic projects of the petrochemical industry, and added: "One of the important concerns of this industry is the production of propylene and its derivatives; propylene is a strategic product and it is known in the world as the caviar of the petrochemical industry and the production capacity of this product is currently about 950,000 tons per year in the country.”
He said permits had been issued for construction of plants to bring the production capacity of the item to 4.5 million tons per year.
Muhammadi further said that the plant uses 6 types of catalysts of which 3 had already been produced domestically and the rest were being prepared for mass production in the country.
