Kuwait Parliament Approves New Crown Prince

KUWAIT CITY (Dispatches) – Kuwait’s parliament has approved Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Crown Prince, Kuwait News Agency has reported.
"I swear by Almighty Allah to respect the constitution and the laws of the state, to defend the liberties, interests and properties of the people and to safeguard the independence and territorial integrity of the country and be loyal to the Emir,” Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said while taking an oath before the parliament as crown prince on Thursday.
During a meeting with Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah expressed confidence in Sheikh Mishal’s ability to continue his service for the nation and achieve its interests.
A day earlier, the emir named Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as the Crown Prince of Kuwait, according to Amiri Diwan, which serves as the royal palace of the Kuwaiti emir.
According to the Kuwaiti constitution, the crown prince shall be designated by the Emir within one year, at the latest, from the date of accession of the Emir.
Kuwaiti experts describe Sheikh Meshal as a forceful figure, who steered clear of political battles and spent much of his career helping build the country’s security and defense apparatus.
The 83-year-old Sheikh Nawaf, the former crown prince of Kuwait, succeeded his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al Sabah, who died on September 29 at the age of 91.
Diplomats and analysts say that because of his low-key style and age, Sheikh Nawaf, may delegate a larger portion of responsibilities to the crown prince.
Sheikh Sabah was the architect of his country’s modern foreign policy and a mediator in some of the worst crises to grip the Persian Gulf region.
