Minister: Households to Access to 5G Broadband by February

TEHRAN (Press TV) - Iran’s Telecoms Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi says household access to fifth-generation (5G) broadband service will begin in the country by February 2021.
Speaking in a ceremony to unveil 5G applications in Iran, Azari Jahromi said Iran was intent on developing 5G to compensate for its relatively late expansion of third and fourth generations of internet connections in the country.
He said, however, that providing household access to 5G will take place in certain localities in major cities and through upgrading the existing networks.
The minister said that 5G will be key top Iran’s future plans to develop its National Information Network (NIN) a system which should be able accommodate sensitive online services in few years’ time.
"Based on the sixth development plan and until 2025 some 10 percent of development (work) should take place through new platforms like the 5G,” he said.
Iran successfully tested 5G in late July when users reported a 1.5 gigabit per second of download speed on their mobile phones. Major mobile operators in Iran, including MCI and MTN Irancell, have started works on installing 5G masts in several locations in the capital Tehran.
Azari Jahromi’s comments came as the minister and other high-ranking officials oversaw the signing of a major memorandum of understandings between various government departments to accelerate the rollout of 5G and its applications in Iran.
Among the MoUs signed on Sunday was an agreement to use 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT) in modern transportation services in Kish, a resort island in the Persian Gulf.
The official IRNA news agency said the pilot scheme in Kish and its success would be critical to government efforts to develop 5G network across Iran.
