The Urgent Need to Dismantle Nuclear Weapons

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer

Two days ago the 74th anniversary of the first ever UN General UN Assembly resolution in 1946 on the goal of ridding Planet Earth of nuclear weapons – a year after the unpardonable US crime against humanity in dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – passed away as an insignificant occurrence.
It is rather unfortunate for the future of mankind that at the ongoing General Assembly session in New York at the headquarters of the UN to mark the 75th year of the founding of the World Body, none of the heads of countries possessing atomic arsenals and refusing to dismantle them, have bothered to give even a passing reference to the vital issue of nuclear disarmament, in their pre-recorded video speeches.
Some harped upon the Coronavirus pandemic sweeping across the world, without knowing what to do to eradicate Covid-19 which has reduced important gatherings of senior political figures from all over the globe to mere virtual conferences.
Others like President Donald Trump of the US and senile King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia, uttered preposterous lies in their addresses, without the least inhibition that they were being mocked by the whole world for their shameless falsities.
In such a pathetic atmosphere, UN Secretary-General António Guterres was content to commemorate September 26 with a speech lacking executive measures regarding the grave problem of ridding the Planet of the doomsday weapons.
The former socialist prime minister of Portugal, said: "The world continues to live in the shadow of nuclear catastrophe.”
He rightly pointed out that relations between states possessing nuclear weapons are characterized by "division, distrust and an absence of dialogue”.
He went on to warn that since the nuclear-armed states have chosen to pursue lethal competition over cooperation, "the dangers posed by nuclear weapons are becoming more acute”.
Gueterres is right, but he cannot do anything to pressure the big powers to dismantle the estimated 13,400 nuclear weapons in the arsenals of the US, Russia, China, Britain, France, North Korea, India, Pakistan, and the illegal Zionist entity, Israel.
It is an insult to humanity and all humanitarian values that the US, the world’s topmost terrorist state with a bleak, black, and bloody record of using atomic bombs, is pursuing projects to upgrade its nuclear weapons, irrespective of the fact that a mere accident or a misunderstanding can destroy the Planet, including the users themselves.
In the so-called White House in Washington sits a crazy racist rogue who sees everything red and is seeking re-election as US president despite being impeached by the House of Representatives, and is totally indifferent to the havoc he has caused to his own and other countries.
Trump cannot be trusted, the way he is trying to pick up an unnecessary fight with nuclear power, China. It means if the US Electorate has an iota of regard for humanitarian values it should not give him a second term as it had erred four years ago in declaring him president despite his polling of 3 million less votes than his Democrat rival, Hillary Clinton.
The Subcontinent also sits on a nuclear powder keg, as Islamabad and New Delhi continue to trade dangerous threats with each other, while India has also to contend with the might of nuclear China.
In our neighbourhood in Palestine is the usurper regime of Israel which possesses an undeclared arsenal of several hundred nuclear warheads. The Zionist entity’s satanic nature as well as its record of continued terrorism against the Arab people, makes it the avowed enemy of the whole human race.
In view of these facts, the UN should not limit itself to mere verbal denunciation of the doomsday weapons, but should mobilize the world people to get tighter to pressure their countries to get rid of their nuclear arsenals.
