Safar and its Occasions

Salaam dear young friends. We meet you in the first week of Safar, the second month of mourning for the martyrs of the heart-wrenching tragedy of Karbala. We are still clad in black and will continue to commemorate the life-inspiring death of Imam Husain (AS) till the end of Safar, the climax being Arba’een or anniversary of the traditional 40th after the epic of Ashura.
As all you know, the month of Muharram has ended and Saturday 19th September was the 1st of the month of Safar.
First of Safar is a day of fresh grief, because it was the day when in 61 AH, the imprisoned womenfolk and children of the Prophet’s Household were paraded as captives in Damascus before mobs unaware of their identity, while being taken to the court of the infidel Yazid ibn Mu’awiyya.
The Prophet’s granddaughter, Hazrat Zainab (SA), rose to the occasion and through her eloquent sermons in the court of Damascus, unmasked Yazid’s hypocrisy. Thanks to her selfless efforts and that of her nephew Imam Zain al-Abedin (AS), Islam was nurtured back to life and truth became victorious.
Hazrat Ruqa’iyya (SA) despite her tender age and in spite of the fact that she was the great-granddaughter of the Prophet of Islam, was scolded for crying for her father by the so-called Muslims, who were so heartless that they snatched her earrings, ripping apart her earlobes, which dripped with blood during the arduous journey from Iraq to Syria.
In Damascus, she was horrified at the gruesome sight of her father’s head placed in a tray before the Godless Yazid, who blasphemously poked his cane at the blessed teeth of the Prophet’s grandson.
Imagine their plight, especially of 3-year old Ruqa’iyya (SA), who had to witness the gory spectacle of her father’s (Imam Husain (AS)) blood-soaked head presented before the tyrant in a tray, and on the 5th day after the arrival of the noble captives in Damascus, and only 25 days following the tragedy of Ashura, the little girl kissing the lips of her father and placing her tender head upon them, cried incessantly, until her soul flew to the ethereal heavens.
May God curse the Omayyad and all those dastards who, support them and emulate their barbaric ways against Muslims!
Two days back on 3rd of Safar, is the birthday (according to a narration) of Imam Muhammad Baqer (AS), the 5th Infallible Heir of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), who was born in Medina in 57 AH, and was present in Karbala on the Day of Ashura as a less than a 4-year boy.
He witnessed the tragic martyrdom of his grandfather, Imam Husain (AS), and in the aftermath of the heartrending tragedy was among the captives that were taken by the Omayyad hordes to the courts of the tyrants in Kufa and Damascus.
As you know, the famous Ziyarat-e Ashura that the faithful recite on the anniversary of the tragic 10th of Muharram for the Immortal Martyr of Karbala, is narrated on his authority.
Well dear friends, Friday 25th of September (7th of Safar) will be the martyrdom anniversary (according to a tradition) of Imam Hasan al-Mujtabah (AS), grandson and the 2nd infallible successor of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), and also on the same day (according to another tradition) is the birthday of Imam Musa al-Kazem (AS), the 7th infallible successor of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA).
So, God bless you all, stay at home and stay safe, see you next week.
