Rouhani Warns Against Any COVID Complacency

TEHRAN (Dispatches) -- President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday called on Iranians to observe health protocols with more diligence, warning against any complacency in the face of an approaching cold season which may exacerbate the coronavirus outbreak.
Addressing a daily session of a national task force to fight the new coronavirus, Rouhani underlined the need to intensify precautionary measures against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The president touched on reports about cases of a pneumonia-like disease in a number of neighboring countries, which is said to be more dangerous than the new coronavirus.
Rouhani stressed the need for Iranians to cast off possible boredom with health restrictions and social distancing protocols, saying they have nothing but to get used to the new way of life.
This way of life may continue even after a viable vaccine is available, the president said.
A government health specialist said on Saturday around half of all coronavirus patients being treated in intensive care units are dying. The death toll among those on ventilators is 90%.
"In all, 10% to 12% of hospitalized patients are losing their lives,” Masoud Mardani, a specialist of infectious diseases and a member of the government coronavirus task force, told the ISNA news agency.
He was speaking on Saturday as the health ministry said the country’s coronavirus death toll had risen by 166 to 24,118.
Payam Tabarsi, head of infectious diseases at Tehran’s Masih Daneshvari Hospital, said the number of emergency room patients being admitted at his facility had

"We always avoid war, but if the enemies want to threaten and encroach upon our national interests in any part of the country, we will firmly stand up to any such move,” he said. "I’m telling the enemies not to repeat a mistake.”
The top commander also urged Iran’s neighbors to reinforce their unity to stand up to enemies.
The admiral touched upon Iran’s policy with regards to blocking the Strait of Hormuz, saying it is up to Iran’s strategic decision-makers to make a decision on the issue.
What is related to the IRGC, he said, is that it should execute any order it receives and the force is ready to fulfill any such order.
Admiral Tangsiri warned the enemies that the Islamic Republic will cut off any hand which is extended out of aggression.
"We will cut off their hand if it is extended in aggression, and if they grit their teeth, we will smash them in their mouths,” he said. "This is not a slogan, and we have proved it in practice.”
Tangsiri also touched on normalization deals which Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates signed this month with the occupying regime of Israel.
He said the presence of the Zionist regime is definitely to the detriment of the regional states. "We consider this presence a threat and believe that our neighbors should not allow it.”
