Turkey Launches New Anti-PKK Operation

ANKARA (Xinhua) – Turkish security forces launched a new operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the eastern city of Van, the interior ministry said Tuesday.
Operation Lightning-10 started with 1,040 security personnel, including forces from Gendarmerie Special Operations, police and security guards, said the ministry in a written statement.
So far, at least 46 PKK members have been killed, 26 collaborators caught, 90 caves, shelters and storages destroyed, and a large number of arms, ammunition and other supplies seized in a series of Lightning operations, according to the ministry.
Last week, Turkey launched Operation Lightning-9 in the eastern cities of Mus and Bingol as well as the southeastern city of Diyarbakir.
The Turkish security forces regularly conduct anti-terror operations in the eastern and southeastern parts of Turkey. Operation Lightning-1 started in the southeastern city of Sirnak on July 14.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has been rebelling against the Turkish government for more than 30 years, which has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 people.
